CLASSIFICATION:  ELEVATOR INSPECTOR

BASIC PURPOSE:  To inspect elevator equipment and perform safety tests to assure continued safe operation and compliance with state law and regulations.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Conducts inspections of elevators to determine if the equipment is in safe and proper working order. 

 

·        Assists in the performance of a biennial safety (drop) test on elevators.

 

·        Prepares reports of inspections and makes recommendations relative to issuance of a certificate by the Commissioner of Labor.

 

·        Discusses problems with business owners and other persons relating to safety hazards associated with elevators.

 

·        Maintains records of elevator inspections and suspends elevators found unsafe or disqualified by legal requirements.

 

·        Rides on top of the elevator car during elevator operation to assure that all systems are properly intact.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in developing formats and procedures for special applications OR in investigating and reviewing the use of equipment and data for a specialized function.

 

Knowledge:  Requires knowledge of business practices and procedures or technical training in a craft or trade, including working from detailed instructions, to apply knowledge in a variety of practical situations.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for achieving direct service objectives by assessing agency service needs and making preliminary recommendations for the development of alternative short-term program policies or procedures.  Errors at this level result in incomplete assessments or misleading recommendations causing a disruption of agency programs or policies.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

Communication:  Requires summarizing data, preparing reports and making recommendations based on findings which contribute to solving problems and achieving work objectives.  This level also requires presenting information for use by administrative-level managers in making decisions.

 

Complexity:  Requires coordinating a combination of diverse job functions in order to integrate professional and technical agency goals.  This level also requires considerable judgment to implement a sequence of operations or actions.

 

Independent Action:  Requires objective assessment in analyzing and developing new work methods and procedures subject to periodic review and in making decisions according to established technical, professional or administrative standards.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Associate's degree or its equivalent from a recognized college or university with major study in engineering or trades directly involving elevators.  Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

 

Experience:  Five years' experience in performing inspections of elevators.  Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

 

License/Certification:  Must hold a valid New Hampshire elevator inspector license or an equivalent inspection license with reciprocal privileges and possess a current valid driver’s license.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  The Inspector shall not engage in the sale of any article or device relating to elevators or their appurtenances.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Thorough knowledge of all types of elevators.  Thorough knowledge of inspection procedures as established by Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators ANSI/ASME A17.1.  Extensive knowledge of state statutes and rules and regulations of the NH Department of Labor regarding elevator inspections.  Ability to conduct inspections and prepare written reports required by the Commissioner of Labor.  Ability to meet the public and establish rapport with owners and operators of businesses.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
