BASIC PURPOSE: To conduct standard and specialized
electroencephalographic tests, and to supervise and train technical staff and
students.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs standard and
specialized EEG studies using EEG, evoked response and computerized brain
mapping equipment.
·
Makes calibrations on
EEG apparatus for standard and specialized recordings; inspects, cleans and
assures proper maintenance of equipment.
·
Explains EEG
procedures to patients, family members and students.
·
Prepares technical
reports combining information in the patient record, behavioral observations
and physical data from EEG tests.
·
Maintains laboratory
standards and statistics concerning the laboratory norms for evoked potentials
and brain mapping procedures.

Supervises section
staff; instructs and supervises students.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in recommending routine
changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling and
reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex
machines.
Knowledge: Requires logical or scientific
understanding to analyze problems of a specialized or professional nature in a
particular field.
Impact: Requires responsibility for
contributing to immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct
provision of services to the public or other state agencies. Errors at this level result in
inaccurate reports or invalid test results and require significant investment
of time and resources to detect.
Supervision: Requires direct supervision of other
employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including
scheduling work, recommending leave, reviewing work for accuracy, performance
appraisal, or interviewing applicants for position vacancies.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an adverse working environment containing a combination of
disagreeable elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity
for completing work assignments.
This level includes work-related accidents or assault.
Physical Demands: Requires medium work, including
continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting
as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or
coordination in operating machines or equipment.
Communication: Requires explaining facts, interpreting
situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of
action. This level also requires
interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the
general public.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
to establish facts, to draw daily operational conclusions, or to solve
practical problems. This level
also requires providing a variety of alternative solutions where only limited
standardization exists.
Independent Action: Requires objective assessment in
analyzing and developing new work methods and procedures subject to periodic
review and in making decisions according to established technical, professional
or administrative standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor's degree from a recognized
college demonstrating relevant courses in physical sciences, medical studies or
neuroanatomy or graduation from an accredited school of EEG technology.
Experience: Two years' experience in a hospital or
clinic based laboratory working in the electroencephalography unit with one
year in a supervisory capacity.
Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for
one year of required formal education.
License/Certification: American Board of Registration of
Electroencephalographic Technologists or its equivalent; Board eligible in
evoked potentials.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Thorough knowledge of the operation of
an electroencephalograph, brain mapping equipment and evoked potential equipment;
ability to recognize malfunctions and make minor repairs. Ability to locate and distinguish
tracings indicative of brain disorders and recognize and discount outside
interference which affects the tracings.
Thorough knowledge in the use and application of statistics; ability to
use computer programs for quantitative EEG, brain mapping and evoked potential
studies. Ability to obtain the
cooperation of others and to attend to details for considerable periods of
time. Ability to communicate
effectively. Ability to establish
and maintain harmonious relationships with residents, associates and
doctors. Must be willing to
maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as
determined by the agency appointing authority.
