CLASSIFICATION:  AIR POLLUTION TECHNICIAN II

BASIC PURPOSE:  To certify the validity of data collected in an ambient air monitoring network and to repair the equipment used in that network.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·        Performs calibrations, audits various types of air monitoring equipment and certifies National Bureau of Standards recorded data to ensure that pollutant level guidelines are met.

 

·        Diagnoses and repairs malfunctioning electronic and pneumatic systems used in air monitoring equipment to ensure reliability.

 

·        Trains and supervises staff to ensure operation of air monitoring equipment according to established working procedures.

 

·        Instructs inexperienced technicians on proper field procedures in the investigation of air pollution complaints to ensure complaint investigations are conducted properly.

 

·        Implements special air pollution studies, including site location and operation of portable air monitoring equipment.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:

 

Skill:  Requires skill in recommending routine changes in standardized operating procedures OR in retrieving, compiling and reporting data according to established procedures OR in operating complex machines.

 

Knowledge:  Requires knowledge of business practices and procedures or technical training in a craft or trade, including working from detailed instructions, to apply knowledge in a variety of practical situations.

 

Impact:  Requires responsibility for contributing to immediate, ongoing agency objectives by facilitating the direct provision of services to the public or other state agencies.  Errors at this level result in inaccurate reports or invalid test results and require significant investment of time and resources to detect.

 

Supervision:  Requires partial supervision of other employees doing work which is related or similar to the supervisor, including assigning job duties, providing training, giving instructions and checking work.

 

Working Conditions:  Requires performing regular job functions in an environment which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards.

 

Physical Demands:  Requires medium work, including continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination in operating machines or equipment.

 

 

Communication:  Requires explaining facts, interpreting situations, or advising individuals of alternative or appropriate courses of action.  This level also requires interviewing or eliciting information from state employees or members of the general public.

 

Complexity:  Requires coordinating a combination of diverse job functions in order to integrate professional and technical agency goals.  This level also requires considerable judgment to implement a sequence of operations or actions.

 

Independent Action:  Requires a range of choice in applying a number of technical or administrative policies under general direction and in making routine decisions or in recommending modifications in work procedures for approval by supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  Associate's degree from a recognized college or technical school with a major study in electronic technology or mechanics.  Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

 

Experience:  Four years' experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical or electrical equipment with at least two years in a supervisory capacity.  Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

 

License/Certification:  Valid New Hampshire driver's license.

 

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:  Thorough knowledge of the fundamental of mechanics and electronics.  Knowledge of the procedures for repair, maintenance, calibration and auditing of ambient air quality monitoring equipment.  Ability to identify problem areas, recommend solutions and procure necessary components to assure continuity in monitoring efforts.  Ability to meet with public officials and logically explain the objectives of the program.  Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with associates and the general public.  Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
