CONCORD - Dr. Susan Lynch will lead children, parents and teachers in the eighth annual Scholastic and Reading is Fundamental Global Read-a-Thon on Friday. As the state Ambassador for Reading for Scholastic Read for 2007, Dr. Lynch is encouraging all children, teachers, librarians and parents to take time during the day to read a book for at least 2,007 seconds (approximately 33 ½ minutes).
Dr. Lynch will lead the statewide celebration of reading by reading to students at Bakersville Elementary School in Manchester from 10 a.m. -11 a.m. Joining her will be, Gov. John Lynch, New Hampshire children's authors Tomie dePaola and Donna Ciocca, Manchester Monarch Rich Petiot, and Paul Rondeau, the Manchester Police Department's "Officer Friendly." Scholastic will donate 500 children's books to Bakersville Elementary, a Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) site in New Hampshire. The books will be presented to the students following the reading portion of the event.
"Literacy is incredibly important in the lives of New Hampshire citizens and children. It has an impact on our children's education and on their future, which is why I am so proud to be an Ambassador of Reading for the Scholastic Read For 2007: Read For Life reading campaign," stated Dr. Lynch. "Reading helps build better lives and all children across New Hampshire and the entire nation deserve to experience the joy of reading a book."
Joining Dr. Lynch in the Read For 2007: Read For Life reading celebrations are Gubernatorial First Spouses in states across the country. Last year, 49 First Spouses participated in Scholastic Read For 2006 and led their states in exciting reading events in schools, libraries, and at state capitols, with more than one million children and 24,000 teachers in all 50 U.S. states and more than 37 countries participating.
"Scholastic Read For 2007 encourages children around the world to join together to share the magic, excitement and fun that reading offers," said Francie Alexander, Chief Academic Officer at Scholastic. "We are thankful for the participation of the Gubernatorial First Spouses who will serve as reading role models to inspire kids across the country to be lifelong learners. With their support, December 8th will be a wonderful celebration of reading in New Hampshire and across the country."
Over 200 New Hampshire classrooms have signed up to participate in Scholastic Read For 2007 this year. For more information about Scholastic Read For 2007, and to view the world map of participating countries, please visit www.scholastic.com/readfor2007.
