CLAREMONT - Following through on an initiative developed at Gov. John Lynch's economic forum here in April, Gov. Lynch, University System Officials, Sen. Bob Odell and Claremont officials today announced plans for a new University Center in downtown Claremont.
"In April, we came together to discuss how the state could better partner with Claremont to boost economic development. We decided then that one of the most important things the state could was to locate a center of higher education in Claremont's downtown," Gov. Lynch said. "Today we are here to announce that the University System will soon be signing a lease for just such a center."
The University Center, with Granite State College as its anchor, is expected to open this winter.
"The University Center will be catalyst for creating an educated workforce that is essential to achieving economic success here in Claremont and across our state. This center will be an easily accessible location for workers seeking to better their skills and for businesses seeking to get additional training for their workers," Gov. Lynch said. "In addition, it will be a boost to Claremont's downtown, bringing in 200 students, to start, regularly into the area."
Sen. Bob Odell said, "This is a bold step going forward in the process Governor Lynch started in April. This step today furthers the commitment made by the state of New Hampshire to having a higher education center in Claremont."
Among those attending today's announcement were Steve Reno, the University System's Chancellor, Dr. Karol LaCroix, the President of Granite State College, Claremont Mayor Scott Pope, Claremont City Manager Guy Santagate, and Nancy Merrill, Business Development Coordinator for the City of Claremont.
"The students, faculty and staff at Granite State College are enthusiastic about the move to downtown Claremont. The new facility provides more classroom and office space and greater visibility for the college," said Karol LaCroix. "I am grateful to the owner, Karen Heller, for her willingness to make the space available and to Mr. Guy Santagate, the City Manager, and members of his staff for their assistance throughout the process of finding the right location."
