Governor to Nominate Charlie MacVeagh of Marlborough To Serve on New Hampshire Retirement Board

CONCORD - Gov. John Lynch will nominate Charlton MacVeagh of Marlborough to serve on the board of the New Hampshire Retirement System at tomorrow's Governor and Council meeting. If the council confirms the nomination, Gov. Lynch intends to designate Mr. MacVeagh to serve as the board's chair.

"The retirement system is a $5 billion organization charged with one of the most important jobs in state government, ensuring a secure retirement for our states employees, police officers, firefighters, and teachers,"Gov. Lynch said.

"It is past time to remove the cloud hanging over the retirement system by moving forward with new leadership,"Gov. Lynch said. "Charlie MacVeagh is dedicated to public service, has long experience in the financial world, and is more than qualified to help manage the investments of our state's retirement system. I hope the Council will move quickly to confirm his nomination.

"Mr. McVeagh has nearly 40 years in experience in investing and banking. From 1990 to 1998, he served as president and CEO of RiverMead, a non-profit corporation, which developed and operates a retirement community and health center in Peterborough. From 1988 to 1990, he served as president of Granite State Bankshares Inc. in Keene; and from 1979 to 1989, he was chairman of the First National Bank of Peterborough.

Mr. MacVeagh has been involved in numerous non-profits and served on several state boards. From 1998 to 2004, he was the director and treasurer of the state's Business Finance Agency, and he is currently a member of the Community Development Block Grant Advisory Board. From 1987 to 1993, he served as one of the four public directors of the New Hampshire Land Conservation Program.

From 1988 to 1997, he was a member of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation's Investment Committee. From 1995 to 2004, he was director of the Crotched Mountain Foundation, where he served in a variety of roles, including as chair of the investment committee. He is currently a trustee of the foundation.

He has also served as a trustee for Franklin Pierce College, the Trust for Public Lands, and the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, as a founding director of the Monadnock Community Foundation, and is currently president of the Raylynmore Opera.

He graduated from Harvard College in 1957.
