CONCORD - Gov. John Lynch said today that New Hampshire stands ready to provide assistance, as needed, to states affected by Hurricane Katrina.
"The hundreds of thousands of our fellow Americans who have had their lives devastated by Hurricane Katrina are in all of our hearts and minds. We stand ready as a state to offer any assistance we can to help the people of the Gulf States recover," Gov. Lynch said.
"New Hampshire's emergency management officials are in close contact with national organizations coordinating relief, are inventorying the resources that we can provide, and are prepared to offer any assistance that is needed," Gov. Lynch said.
At the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, New Hampshire's Division of Forest and Lands is assembling a crew that will be available for deployment to assist in recovery efforts. The National Guard is also in close contact with federal officials.
According to emergency management officials, New Hampshire is likely to be asked for help in providing medical personnel, running emergency operations centers, and in assessing the damage.
Last year, more than 200 New Hampshire citizens deployed to the Gulf Coast to assist in clean-up efforts. Many of those citizens remain on the Federal Emergency Management Agency's volunteer database and will be called to support relief efforts as needed.
Other citizens interested in volunteering can register through New Hampshire's Citizen Corps at www.nhcitizencorps.org.
"I share the feeling of citizens across New Hampshire who want to help in some way," Gov. Lynch said. "The best help all of us can provide right now is to provide financial support to the relief efforts that are being organized by a number of groups."
