1999 Smithsonian Folklife Festival Theme

A variety of public agencies are dedicated to preserving aspects of the state's heritage and contribute to it. Their work touches upon city and town planning, transportation, culture and arts, historic preservation, library management, education, agriculture, dairy promotion, corrections, and energy. Private partnerships dedicated to the concept of resource management and land stewardship are an important partner in the efforts to preserve New Hampshire's cherished natural resources and open landscape.

On board the Gulf Challenger, volunteers get an opportunity to participate in a mini research cruise to either the Isles of Shoals or around the Great Bay Estuary as [art of the Great Bay Coast Watch sponsored by UNH Sea Grant Extension.

The Granite State Dairy Promotion encourages New Hampshire dairy farmers and their products. At this Got Milk picnic for the Meals-on-Wheels program, volunteers demonstrate making ice cream.

This theme area was added for 2000 Celebrate New Hampshire festival and featured organizations whose mission is to improve community services and quality of life in New Hampshire.
