The EPHT Program is looking at how our health is affected by hazards in our environment, but making the connection between environmental threats and chronic diseases is not easy. Environmental hazards can have subtle effects on human health and they rarely cause immediate illness. Their effect on the human body can go unnoticed and years or decades may pass before symptoms appear. A single exposure or a single chemical may not trigger an illness, but an accumulation of exposures over time can take its toll. Many hazards may influence the appearance of one disease, while a single hazard may influence many outcomes, and genes and behavior may also affect how environmental hazards cause disease in individuals. Only by systematically measuring environmental hazards, tracing their geographic distribution, documenting their residues in human tissues, and understanding their connection with illness can we help prevent suffering and disease caused by environmental hazards.
Environmental hazard indicators for EPHT were developed by the national EPHT Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They include:

Nationally consistent data and measures (NCDMs) for each indicator are being generated by state EPHT programs for inclusion in the national EPHT Network. NCDMs for the following indicators for New Hampshire are available on the Environmental Health Data Integration Network (EHDIN).
All data included in EHDIN contains metadata. Metadata are often described as "data about data". Descriptive metadata include information that describes the content, quality, and context of a data resource for the purpose of facilitating identification and discovery. It may reference additional information like quality assurance documents and data dictionaries. By providing information about the data, descriptive metadata helps a user decide if a data resource is appropriate for the intended use.

- Who created or collected the data
- When the data was last updated
- How the data can be obtained
