The Environment Section is responsible for providing Department employees with the information and support necessary to achieve and maintain environmental compliance. In addition, the OSC provides the knowledge, programming and outreach to identify and incorporate best practices to improve the environmental stewardship of the Department.

Part of the Environment Section's outreach efforts involves the development and distribution of information relating to regulatory updates, regulatory FAQs and best practice bulletins. These documents serve as a bridge between the regulatory language and in-the-field practices. Below are the links to helpful documents and also to some helpful Web sites:

  • Goals:
    • Improved DOT environmental performance through compliance with applicable environmental requirements and proactive environmental stewardship
  • Strategy:
    • Raise employee awareness of environmental rules and regulations, and promote best practices, through exemplary leadership, education, training and personal accountability
  • Tools/Methods:
    • New Employee Orientation - emphasize environmental stewardship expectations and responsibilities
    • Performance Evaluation - stress accountability of employees and supervisors
    • Training - reinforce environmental requirements and best practices
    • Auditing - check compliance
    • Communication - provide information through bulletin boards, environmental "Alerts", best practices, regulatory updates, stewardship "days", Web site, etc.
    • Programs - detail and standardize requirements
    • Management System – manage impacts to the environment through a systematic approach, using the principles of ISO 14001
