Public Meetings Scheduled To Launch State Rail Plan

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) will host two public meetings in April to obtain input to support the development of an updated State Rail Plan. The first meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 6 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in Concord at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center (Planetarium). The second will be held on Thursday, April 7 at the Community Center in Littleton, also from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

The State Rail Plan will examine the existing strengths and weaknesses of the state rail system, including a review of factors that affect the system. It will consider the financial feasibility, mobility improvements, environmental impacts, enhanced livability, and other impacts associated with rail improvements. The analysis will build upon the existing New Hampshire State Rail Plan, created in 2001. The completed plan will include specific recommendations for potential improvements to the New Hampshire rail system.

"A strong transportation system supports the economy and rail is an integral part of a complete transportation system," said NHDOT Deputy Commissioner Mike Pillsbury. "We want to look at the economic impact of any proposed initiative and consider opportunities for public and private sector investment."

An important part of the development of the plan will be making sure the public has an opportunity to provide input throughout the process. The NHDOT has formed a Technical Advisory Committee and is also interviewing regional economic organizations, planning organizations, railroads, and other stakeholders to identify and understand current issues and future opportunities.

A final State Rail Plan is scheduled for completion by the end of 2011.
