|Shaker Bridge (Main St.) Over Mascoma Lake In Enfield Closed
Detour In Effect Pending The Construction Of A New Bridge
The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) announces the immediate closure of the Shaker Bridge (Main Street) over Mascoma Lake in Enfield.
The NHDOT's decision to close the bridge to all traffic follows a recent underwater inspection of the bridge that found severe corrosion in steel bridge supports.
An average of 1,200 vehicles cross the bridge each day. Electronic message boards are being used to alert motorists of the bridge closure. Detour signs will direct motorists to alternative routes via NH Route 4A and US Route 4.
Built in 1938, the Shaker Bridge has been on the State's Red List for many years, and has had a load restriction of 15-tons for several years due to its deteriorated condition.
An estimated $9.2 million project to replace the bridge is scheduled to advertise in September 2010.
