|Bridge Maintenance Work on Long Bridge in Portsmouth
Intermittent Lane Closures and Traffic Delays
The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) announces repair work is getting underway on the Sarah Long Bridge, which carries the US Route 1 Bypass over the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME.
Weather permitting, NHDOT Bridge Maintenance crews will install supports under certain steel floor beams on piers of the New Hampshire approach spans. This work is needed to retain the current 20-ton load restriction on the bridge.
All work will be done during daytime hours and is expected to take six to eight weeks to complete. Daytime lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on the Long Bridge will be necessary periodically in order to complete the work.
The replacement of the Long Bridge is currently scheduled to begin in 2015. The Maine Department of Transportation is the lead agency for the bridge replacement project.
