Workstation Performance
A workstation does not take care of itself, if you don't deal with it now then you'll deal with it later. The following items are recommended periodically and can be done with standard user privilege. Take note that different operating platforms may not have every function as described below. If you feel uncomfortable with any of these operations, then summon the assistance of the Cad/d Application staff.
In addition to these steps, it is strongly recommended to arrange for Disk Defragmentation at least once a year. Users do not have the privilege to run the Disk Defragmenter, therefore you must request this service from either DoIT or the Cad/d Application staff.
Microsoft Outlook
From the Tools menu:- Select Options
- From the Other Tab, select Advanced Options…
- From the Advanced Options panel, select the Add-In Manager
- Uncheck the Outlook Scan entry if it is checked. This feature is addressed more efficiently by our network. Leaving it on is a redundant process and it retards Outlook's startup. It should stay off once it is unchecked.
- Select OK to close out of these panels
Internet Explorer
From the Tools menu- Select Internet Options…
- From the General Tab, Select:
- Delete Cookies…, Then click OK to proceed.
- Delete Files…, Then click OK to proceed.
- Clear History, Then click Yes to proceed.
- Select OK to close out of the Internet Options panel.
Windows Explorer
From the C:\ Drive, delete the contents from the following folders. There are files from these locations that will not delete, that's ok, just do the ones you can:
- \Quarantine
- \Temp...
- \Windows\Temp...
- \Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Local Settings\Temp...
- \Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files...
Disk Cleanup
From the Start Menu on your Desktop, select:- Programs
- Accessories
- System Tools
- Disk Cleanup, this program runs an analysis before the Disk Cleanup panel appears.
- From the Disk Cleanup tab, check every entry in the Files to Delete area that has a size greater than zero.
- Select OK to proceed.
- Select Yes to perform the cleanup. This could take a while depending on your workstation's condition. It is possible to work on other applications while the cleanup is in progress.
Project Data
Never keep project data on your C:\ drive unless you regularly back this data up (preferably to a network location). This includes photos, videos, reports and drawings. The reasons are as follows:
- In your absence, it is not likely that some one would consider to look there. Not to mention that they may lack the privilege to access this data with out your account and password (which you agreed not to share).
- When your workstation fails, the data and the work you've done with it are lost.
- Storing data on your workstation will eventually slow it down.
Keep all project data organized to the appropriate network locations. If network space is a issue, DoIT will increase your limit (call 271-7555). Like many things in life, plan for the worst and hope fore the best.
