Preparing 3D topo and ctr Drawings for MicroStation V8i

Pre-created topo3D and ctr3d dpw's and dgn's exist in the MX directory of all new projects.  These files need to have their respective models drawn into them.  Ensure the TOPO models defaults are set to topo.

If they do not exist, they must be created. FIrst, change the seed file to the 3D seed, NHSEEDFT.DGN. Select View from the MX menu, then Configuration. When the "MX Configuration" panel appears, select the File Management tab. Change the 3 seed file entries and click OK. Next, select New Plan Display from the File menu. Enter the new drawing name, topo3d.

Existing 3D Topo Drawing

  • Open MX and select the topo3D.dpw on the way in or use File > Open Display/drawing and select the topo3D.dpw.
  • Select Display>Plan with Style Set.  Model name TOPO; Style set name topo.pss.
  • This drawing needs to be exported to create the MicroStation drawing.  Select File>Export>Native DGN
  • The file should be saved to the PRJ directory which is where the projects MicroStation drawings reside.  The file name should be saved with the project number preceding it.... i.e. 12345topo3D.dgn.

This drawing can now be used in MicroStation to query elevations.  Use the element information tool to find elevations if it is attached as a reference file to a 2D dgn.

Existing 3D Contours - CTR Drawing

If a CONTOURS model does not exist or if it has the incorrect interval, you will need to create new contours.

  • Modify>Edit Models>Delete Model>CONTOURS  will delete the outdated CONTOURS model.
  • Select Analysis>Contours>Height Contours from Triangulation to generate new ones.
Select the TRIANGLES model, TX00 String; and in the Contour Model Name type in CONTOURS, then hit a <tab>.  MX will recognize that the model does not exist and will prompt you to create it.
  • Under the interval tab check the that the intervals are set to what you want.  DES is currently asking for 2 foot minor and 10 foot major contours for erosion control plans.
  • If you are already in the ctr3D display your contours will automatically be displayed after creation.  You will need to remove them from the the display.  Use Display>Erase Display to do so.
  • To redisplay them at the correct scale go to Display>Plan with Style Set...  set the model name and scale and uncheck the Display all Strings box and hit OK.
  • This drawing needs to be exported to create the MicroStation drawing.  Select File>Export>Native DGN.
  • The file should be saved to the PRJ directory which is where all the projects MicroStation drawings reside.  The file name should be saved with the project number preceding it.... i.e. 12345ctr.dgn.  IF the file already exists overwrite it, as this is either an empty, superseded drawing or a 2d dgn.
