Attaching Existing Elevations to Master Alignment Strings

Proposed Alignments often require the maintenance of existing elevations, usually at the project matches.  Prior to generating the proposed vertical design, it is recommended to attach existing elevations to the entire master alignment string.

If Quick Vertical is used for the proposed vertical design, beware that any points on the alignment beyond the vertical design are automatically assigned null elevations.  Therefore, existing elevations must be attached after the the proposed vertical design work.  Ultimately, an alignment should never contain null elevations.

Similar to other MX processes, there is more than one way to elevate this string.  The following technique utilizes the Profile Viewer.

In MX, from the Analysis menu, select Sections > Profiles... to obtain the Profile Viewer.

From the Profile Viewer, select the Select Reference String profile button to obtain the Select Reference String panel.  From the Details tab, supply the reference model and reference string of the proposed design.  The Start and End tab allows one to limit the extents of the reference string,  leave these fields blank to address the entire string.

Select OK to return to the profile viewer.  The view port should show the profile of the reference string, a null reference string should display as a horizontal line.

From the Profile Viewer, select the Create Section String profile button to obtain the Define Section String panel.

From the Details tab, specify the project's triangle surface model.  Supply the corresponding existing ground triangulation string.  At the bottom of the Details tab, check the Apply Elevations to Reference String.

To limit the extents of application, go to the Start and End tab, leave these fields blank to address the entire string.

To initiate secondary interpolation (not available when using triangulation), check Secondary Interpolation on the Options tab.  Set the Tolorance and Offset as necessary.

Select OK to append existing elevations to the reference string, this will also return you to the profile viewer.

The view port should now show the profile of the reference string with existing elevations.

Shut down the Profile Viewer to finish.
