Working With MicroStation Cross-Sections (v8i)

This page will explain the process of working on a cross-section drawing that was created by MX. It is a continuation of  Transferring MX cross-sections to MicroStation

Updating MicroStation Cross-Sections

Adding borders

Borders are cells added to the cross-section drawings.

  • Open the cell library selection box. (Element -> Cells)
  • Select the cell library containing the border cells, BORDERS.CEL. (File -> Attach -> borders.cel)
  • Select a vertical [imperial (XSVI) or metric (XSVM)] cell or a horizontal [imperial (XSHI) or metric (XSHM)] cell and hit the Placement button.
  • Use the Place Cell command on the main toolbar to put borders around the columns of sections.  There is a green registration mark at the lower left corner of the section drawing to identify the location of the first border (ignore the top left registration mark).  Borders will need to be scaled to appear correctly.

    Border scale

    Metric 500-scale 100
    Metric 250-scale 50
    Imperial 10-scale 120
    Imperial 5-scale 60

Plotting detail symbols

If the XSDETAIL add-in from MX was used, some detail symbology will already exist on the drawing.  It is likely that these symbols will need to be moved vertically to make the drawings more readable.  Also, annotation needs to be added to the symbols to identify stations, pole numbers, etc.  Symbols that do not come from MX will need to be added manually.  It is recommended that MicroStation Tasks be used for this process.  Using the Tasks will ensure that the correct cell is selected and placed on the correct level.  If the item needed is not included in the Tasks, then contact a member of the support staff to have it added.

Some cells, particularly drainage structures, need to be edited after being placed to add station information.  After the cell is placed, select Find/Replace Text from the Edit menu.  The panel shown below will be displayed.
replace text dialog
Enter the existing text in the Find box and the correct station value in the With box.  Make sure the Change option is set to Replace and the In Cells box is checked.  Select the Change Single button and hit on the cell to be modified.  Hit a second point to confirm the change.  You may have to refresh the display to see the change.

Updating Drainage Features

When pipes are added to the cross-sections by the XSDetail program, they are drawn with a generic linestyle or cell. The user should replace the cells with ones of appropriate size and adjust cross-pipe linestyles so they are the proper size. The pipe cells are stored in the xsect.cel file.

Since catch basins and drop inlets are surveyed at the roadway surface, they will appear there on the cross-sections. If a sump elevation was located, it will be displayed as a + under the drainage structure.  To properly locate the item, the use must move the CB or DI cell down to the elevation of the +.

Adding slope annotation

Adding slope annotation can be done in two ways.

  1. By selecting the Slope Text rule within the cross-section rule file.  Once started, the macro will be expecting you to select two points that define the slope.  A third hit will identify the position where the text is to be placed.  The slope label is set to 0 decimal places. If you need the slope labeled differently, the SlopeSet and Slope macro must be used.
  2. Run the SlopeSet macro to define the format of annotation needed.  This only needs to be done once per session unless the format needs to be changed.  Run the Slope macro. Select the points that define the slope and location of the text.
