Updating MicroStation Cross-Sections (v8 & v8i)

Before You Begin

Before starting this procedure, rename the current cross-section drawing to keep as a backup copy. Follow the procedure outlined in Transferring MX cross-sections to MicroStation to create the new drawing containing the MX data. Many of the elements that were created or modified on the original drawing can be copied onto the new one. The process described below must be done each time the MX drawing is updated to guarantee that the section details are in their correct location.

Updating the Cross-Section Drawing

Some programs have been created to relocate items on a cross-section drawing if the section locations have changed as the result of an update. These programs read the tag data assigned to each section and move elements on the drawing based on the new location of each section on the MX drawing.

Before the drawing can be updated, a macro must be run to ensure that all elements on the drawing are part of a graphic group. A graphic group is a method of grouping a number of elements so they can be edited as a single entity yet retain all their individual properties. Each cross-section is a separate graphic group. Before running the macro, make sure that all elements are turned on in View 1 (including construction elements) so they will get added to the group.

To create these groups run the XSGroup macro. This macro will run quickly and create a data file in the project directory using the drawing name with a .XSD extension. This file contains coordinate data of a known point on each cross-section that will be compared to a similar file created from the MX drawing by the the XSEdit routines. These two files are compared to determine the distance each section must be moved.

Once the data file is created, a Visual Basic program is run to move the cross-sections on the drawing being replaced. First, start a MicroStation session and open the old drawing. Make sure that only one MicroStation session is active.

Using Windows Explorer, NHDOT users should find the file N:\cadd\cadd\exec\XSMove8.exe. Since this program is still being tested, it is not available to users outside the DOT. Double-click on this file to start the program. After accepting the disclaimer the panel shown below will appear.

Select the 3 dot button button to locate the data files for the MX-created drawing (the one you just created) and the drawing to be moved (the one being replaced). Each time you will be prompted to select the .XSD file that corresponds to each drawing. Once both data files have been selected the "Process Data" button will become available. Hit the "Process Data" button to edit the drawing.

Note: This program has not been tested with MicroStation v8i and is not likely to be modified in the future since upcoming developments in MX will probably make it obsolete.

Updating Details

After the sections on the former drawing have been relocated, this drawing can be attached as a reference file to the new drawing. This will allow you to copy elements such as annotation and dimensions from the old drawing to the new one.
