NH DOT strongly encourages a comprehensive planning approach that can lead to solutions as varied as safety education for young pedestrians to construction of new sidewalks or bike routes.
Many communities with successful programs organize what is known as a SRTS task force. This working group or committee brings together people from all sectors of a community. The reason for this should be obvious. While SRTS focuses on schools, many solutions require changes that occur off-campus.
A normal first step in the planning process is to determine why children are not walking or biking to school. A survey of parents and students can determine the reasons for this while measuring the interest in bringing about change. Survey forms and and more information are available at the national SRTS Web site.
