Welcome to the Bureau of Highway Design!
 
The Bureau of Highway Design is part of a public service organization with the major objective of delivering engineering and techinical services, effectively and economically. The Bureau is responsible for the development of plans for the reconstruction, rehabilitation, and new construction of roadways.

Preliminary Design Prepares the preliminary engineering layout including line and grade, along with preliminary cost estimates.
Final Design Completes design of the project to produce an overall solution that balances safety, environmental resources and achieves an economic solution.
Consultant Design Oversees projects which have a consultant firm performing preliminary design and final plan development.
Design Services
  • Utility Section - The Utility Section develops, coordinates, and manages utility and railroad relocation from the preliminary design process thru the construction phase. The section also designs highway lighting and performs hydraulic engineering analyses.
  • Survey Section - The Survey Section collects spatial data and provides the basic framework used to map, build, and maintain New Hampshire's transportation systems.
Roadside
Development
Responsible for providing landscape design for contract work as well as Welcome Center plantings and maintenance pruning, removal and clean up; wildflower establishment; plant stock inspection; and, herbicide and pesticide application.
Contracts and Specifications Responsible for preparing, processing and amending consultant agreements for preliminary engineering and technical services as well as developing, administering and maintaining specifications and special provisions for construction materials and assembling bid proposals for construction projects.

Project Management

 

Responsible for planning, managing and overseeing the completion of highway, bridge, intermodal and specialty projects.
Records Section

Responsible for maintaining project files, plans, forms, office equipment and supply inventory for Highway Design as well as providing the public, upon request, with such information as record plans, Specifications Books, and design manuals.
