What We Do
- Advise the Governor, state agencies, and the NH Legislature on the needs, rights, and interests of citizens with disabilities.
- Coordinate and monitor state agency compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Promulgate and enforce the NH Code for Architectural Barrier-Free Design requiring accessibility to new public buildings and those undergoing major renovations.
- Advise the Governor and Council on the status of state agency lease requests for compliance with accessibility codes.
- Make legislative and policy recommendations regarding the adequacy of state programs, plans and budgets for services to persons with disabilities.
- Initiate legislation while monitoring and reporting on bills of interest to persons with disabilities.
- Provide technical assistance on compliance requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Assist private industry on accessibility compliance due to recent federal and state legislative changes.
- Sponsor programs to educate the public about disability issues.
- Implement and operate the federally funded Client Assistance Program designed to work out problems that may arise between persons with disabilities and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
- Administer a program to distribute telecommunications devices to persons who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind or who have speech or mobility impairments.
- Serve as state affiliate for the New England ADA Technical Assistance Center.
- Operate an information resource and problem-solving center.
- House the Statewide Independent Living Council, which oversees programs for persons with significant disabilities, allowing them increased independence.
