Accessible Toilet and Bathing Rooms
Toilet and bathing rooms must comply with the following codes: the NH State Building and Plumbing Codes, the ADA Standards for Accessible Design, and, in some cases, the Architectural Barrier-Free Design Code for the State of New Hampshire (the AB Code). When there is a difference between these codes, the code standards that provide the best access (the most stringent) apply.
The NH State Building Code incorporates by reference IBC 2006 (refer to Chapters 11 and 34) and ANSI A117.1 (Chapters 6 and 10). To order these codes, contact the ICC at 1-800-786-4452 or at www.iccsafe.org.
The design requirements in ANSI differ from those in the ADA Standards requiring a full comparison between the two codes.
The ADA Standards (ADAAG) for toilet rooms are available at www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/reg3a.html#Anchor-13158. The sections of ADAAG for toilet and bathing rooms are:
4.16 Water Closets
4.17 Toilet Stalls
4.18 Urinals
4.19 Lavatories and Mirrors
4.20 Bathtubs
4.21 Shower Stalls
4.22 Toilet Rooms
4.23 Bathrooms, Bathing Facilities, and Shower Rooms
4.24 Sinks
For more information on the NH Plumbing Code, contact the New Hampshire State Board for the Licensing and Regulation of Plumbers at 603-271-3267 or inspector@plumbing.state.nh.us; www.nh.gov/plumbing/.
