Mini Seminars

The Governor's Commission on Disability is offering a free 6-hour mini-seminar series, presented in three 2-hour sessions, on the accessibility codes that apply in the state of New Hampshire. This seminar will highlight the 2007 changes in the NH State Building Code as well as future codes.

Cheryl Killam, Accessibility Specialist, cheryl.killam@nh.gov, will present the seminars from 2:00-4:00pm on Wednesday, December 19, 2007, January 16, 2008, and February 20, 2008, at the Commission office. To register for this free seminar, contact Karen Geary at 271-4174 or karen.geary@nh.gov.

Seminar I will review the basic requirements for providing accessibility and when/which facilities are required to be accessible. Attending seminars II and III require a general understanding of basic accessibility requirements. A resource CD-Rom will be provided at the end of the third seminar. AIA CEUs will be available.

Mini-Seminar Descriptions:

December 19, 2007

Access Codes Part I
Scoping: this portion will address questions such as - When does a facility have to be accessible? What is readily achievable barrier removal? Do all bathrooms have to be accessible? How many apartments have to be accessible? Do buildings that have historic value have to accessible? When is an elevator required?
Accessibility Basics: Minimum clear floor space and maneuvering space requirements, reach ranges, accessible hardware, switches and controls, etc.
Building and Site Elements: Accessible parking spaces, curb ramps, sidewalks, etc.

January 16, 2008

Access Codes Part II
Accessible Route: Requirements for the accessible path of travel, both exterior and interior, including door types and width, entrances, thresholds, floor surfaces, protruding objects, ramps, stairs, elevators and lifts.
Communication Elements: Alarm systems, signs, telephones and ATMs.

February 20, 2008

Access Codes Part III
Plumbing Elements: Requirements for accessible toilet rooms, showers, bathtubs and water fountains.
Special Rooms & Spaces: Requirements for areas of assembly and specific uses such as hotels, restaurants, courtrooms, holding cells and kitchens.
Built-In Furnishings & Equipment: Requirements for the fixed furniture in hotel rooms, prison cells, kitchens, and courtrooms.
