We Celebrated - 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act
There was standing room only as around 200 people joined the Governor's Commission on Disability, Granite State Independent Living, The NH ADA Coalition, NH Dept of Transportation, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Greater New England Chapter, and others for a celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the ADA.

Awards were given to:
Speaker Andrew Washburn, DOJ Award Appreciation for speaking at event
Business/Public Accommodation Category: Common Man Restaurants/Alex Ray for 35 years of efforts to improve lives of people around New Hampshire and beyond, including people with disabilities, with employment opportunities, excellent food and service, making his buildings accessible to people with all abilities and donations to disability related organizations.
Governmental Category: NH Department of State - The NH Secretary of States office, under the leadership of William Gardner and the implementation work of Assistant Secretary Thomas Manning, has been a model for how an agency can successfully make real the intent of the ADA.
Individual Category: Donna Marie Sorrentino of the UNH Disability Office. - Donna Marie has been the consistent, tireless, compassionate voice at UNH. She has been everywhere and worked with everybody on this campus to ensure the sprit of the ADA and its amendments act has been heard.
Municipal Category: Rochester Police Department and Police Chief David DuBois - The Rochester Police Department and Chief DuBois have changed the way police treat mentally disabled persons with the successful implementation of Chief DuBois' innovative Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT).

Business/Public Accommodation Category: Northern NE Real Estate Network - NNEREN has made revisions to their website and software to improve the accessible information available to real estate buyers, REALTORS®, and other professionals. Accessibility Information Questionnaire helps educate people as to the features that might be needed, especially in commercial property.
Governmental Category: NH Department of Transportation - DOT is commended for working long and hard to improve lives of people with disabilities in New Hampshire, for supporting employees with disabilities, for making their facilities accessible, for encouraging staff to provide services and programs that facilitate ADA compliance and for providing all the support to put on this ADA 20th Anniversary Celebration.
Individual Category: Cheryl Killam - For over 25 years Cheryl has worked both professionally and as a volunteer to help NH agencies, municipalities, businesses, design professionals and residents ensure that the intent and goals of the Americans with Disabilities Act relative to accessibility are upheld.
Legislative Category: Rep. Trinka Russell - Rep. Russell has been a tireless advocate for the understanding of issues of access and the challenges faced by disabled NH citizens.
