Nancy Brinker started the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1982 in memory of her sister, Susan, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. The foundation is a national non-profit organization with Komen Race for the Cure® events in 112 cities across the country. Through early funding of basic research, Komen has laid the groundwork for some of today's most promising breast cancer treatments. Its purpose is:
To provide funding for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment.
To make mammography available to medically underserved women who should be screened according to the Komen Foundation and American Cancer Society guidelines.
To promote positive awareness, education and early detection of breast cancer among women of all ages. When the disease is confined to the breast, the five year survival rate is over 95%.
