Celebrate Women Why Women Quiz Proclamation of NH's Governor 2009 Theme: Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet During the month of March, Women’s History Month is celebrated in New Hampshire and nationally. It is a time to commemorate the vast and significant contributions made by women throughout history. In its first Resolution in 1987 recognizing March as Women’s History Month, Congress urged all citizens to celebrate the many contributions of women as they have spurred “the growth and the strength of our nation in countless recorded and unrecorded ways”. The theme for the 2009 National Women’s History Month is the pioneering and fearless ways that women have taken the lead in the environmental or “green” movement. Rachel Carson, the founder of the contemporary environmental movement is a model of this theme “Taking the Lead to Save our Planet”. We honor all women who have taken leadership in protecting the environment on a local, state, or national level. Governor John Lynch has encouraged acknowledgment of Women’s History Month by issuing a proclamation declaring March to be Women’s History Month. In addition, throughout the month, there will be a number of local and statewide events held to celebrate the contributions of New Hampshire women. In observance of Women’s History Month, the New Hampshire Commission on the Status of Women has posted the Governor's proclamation on this web site along with many other Women's History resources. These resources include information about the significance of Women's History Month, resources for educators and parents, and a list of women authors in New Hampshire. The Commission also encourages use of the resources found at the National Women’s History Project’s web site: http://nhwp.org. The New Hampshire Commission on the Status of Women applauds the efforts of educators and community groups to feature and celebrate the important role women have played in our rich history. We hope you will take the opportunity this March to learn more about the incredible accomplishments of women, past and present. To that end, please make the best use of the materials on our site by sharing them with students, teachers, parents and friends. And celebrate! For more information please also contact the Commission at 271-2660.
