EXECUTIVE COUNCIL REPORT BY RAY BURTON

Over the past four years, I have served on a committee that is very unique.  It has no chair, no officers, no bylaws, no rules, and no treasury.  By meeting every four months and bringing together Peter Thomson of Highway Safety, Kris Rynes, biologist, from Fish and Game, Greg Placy of NH DOT, and Dr. Campbell McLaren of Littleton Hospital, we have been able to significantly reduce the moose accidents and fatalities in our state.

Greg Placy, who serves on a National Animal Collision Committee, brought us the latest technology on preventing animals from being hit by highway vehicles.  Dr. McLaren speaks to both the injuries and fatalities. Kris Rynes brings research on the eating and mating habits of moose and deer.  Peter Thompson brings the money to place sun-powered MOOSE AHEAD/HIGH CAUTION signs for our roadways.

Future goals of this small committee are to provide the media with several public announcements to further educate the traveling public on animal habits and road crossings on the State Highway Systems.

For further information call Peter Thomson at 271-2131 or attend our next meeting on Friday, March 7th at 2:00 PM at the Franconia Notch State Park Office in Franconia Notch, NH.
