How do I verify someone has a license?

Please call the Board's Office at (603) 271-3608, provide a name or license number and the Board staff can verify if the individual holds a valid license.

I do not have a personal license, can I still own a shop?

Yes, you may own a shop if you are not personally licensed. You must employ a licensee to be listed as your manager. To obtain a shop license you must complete and submit the Shop Application and appropriate fee(s) to the Board office. The shop application can be found on the Documents and Forms page. Once the office receives and processes your application, the inspector will call you to schedule an inspection of the facility. A shop license does not authorize an owner to practice cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, or manicuring.

How do I file a complaint?

The Board's Administrative Rules require that complaints are submitted in writing and shall contain the name and address of the complainant, the name and address of the licensee against whom the complaint is directed, date, time, place and summary of alleged violation(s) and any other information the complainant believes pertinent to the complaint. Please submit the above to the Board of Barbering, Cosmetology, and Esthetics at 121 South Fruit St, Concord NH 03301 or fax to (603) 271-8889.

I have moved, how do I change my mailing address with the Board?

The Board's Administrative Rules require notification within 30 days of an address change in writing. Please provide in writing your current name, address and your license number. A phone number to contact you would also be helpful. There is also a Change of Address form available on the Documents and Forms page. Please note that State mail does not forward and will be returned to the Board office. This means you will not receive a renewal notice if the Board does not have a current address.

When does my personal license expire?

All personal cosmetology licenses expire in the even years and the last day of the licensee's birth month. All personal barber, esthetic, and manicurists licenses expire in the odd year and the last day of the licensee's birth month.

When does my shop or booth license expire?

All shop and booth licenses expire in the odd years and the last day of the licensee's birth month.

My personal license is expired, how do I renew?

Please go to the Documents and Forms page and print out the renewal of personal license information and follow the directions listed.

My personal license has lapsed for more than 5 years, what do I do?

If your personal license has been expired for 5 years or more you will have to take the full NH State Board exam. Please go to the Documents and Forms page and print out How to apply for the New Hampshire Exam paperwork. Follow directions listed.

I would like to booth rent, what do I do?

Please complete the Booth Rental application found on the Documents and Forms page and submit all necessary paperwork and fee(s) to the Board office. Once the Board office receives and processes your application, the inspector will call you to schedule an inspection date. All initial booth renters must be inspected before they begin working.

I am relocating my booth rental, do I need an inspection?

No, relocating booth renters do not require an inspection. The Booth Rental application and fee(s) must still be completed and submitted to the Board. The application may be found under the Documents and Forms page. Once the Board office receives and processes your application, the booth rental license will be mailed to you.

I would like to open a shop, what do I do?

Please complete the Shop Application found on the Documents and Forms page and submit all necessary paperwork and fee(s) to the Board office. Once the office receives and processes your application, the inspector will call you to schedule an inspection. All facilities must be inspected prior to opening. There are minimum requirements a facility must meet, please see Bar 302.02 to 302.08 of the Administrative Rules.

I would like to relocate my shop/salon, what do I do?

To relocate a shop/salon, complete the Shop Application found on the Documents and Forms page and submit all necessary paperwork and fee(s) to the Board office. Once the office receives and processes your application, the inspector will call you to schedule an inspection. All facilities must be inspected prior to opening in a new location. There are minimum requirements a facility must meet, please see Bar 302.02 to 302.08 of the Administrative Rules.

What equipment do I need to booth rent or open a salon?

Please go to the Administrative Rules and refer to Bar 302.02 to 302.08. If you have questions on the requirements, please call the Board office at 603-271-3608.

How do I apply for the NH State Board Exam?

If you are graduating from a cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, or manicuring school in New Hampshire, the school will give you an application to submit to the testing company. If you graduated from a school that is not in New Hampshire, please go to the Documents and Forms page and print How to Apply for the New Hampshire Exam. Once the Board office receives your information, and it is determined that you qualify for the exams, a Verification of Eligibility form and an exam application will be mailed to you.

Can I take the exams in a language other than English?

No. The Board's Administrative rules specify that the written and practical exams shall be administered in English only.

How do I get a temporary working permit?

The Board office will issue a temporary working permit once notification has been received from the testing company that you have applied for the exam. If you have applied for an exam and have not received a permit within a reasonable amount of time, please call the office at 603-271-3608 for further information.
